Sunscreen 201: Saving Face

I often hear complaints from clients who don’t want to wear sunscreen on their faces. Breakouts, clogged pores and greasy skin are the most common complaints and I totally understand where they are coming from. Still, wearing sunscreen on your face EVERY DAY is critical so the secret is to find the right mix of products that work for your skin type.

There are a lot of moisturizers on the market now that have SPF 15 built right in them. This is not only a great time saver but if the product is in a line that you already use, you’re likely to get good results as a basic level of protection. But as I mentioned in an earlier post, SPF 15 isn’t quite enough especially to protect the delicate skin on your face. This is where we have a leg up on the boys because we have the option of a physical sunscreen like mineral makeup to add an extra layer of sun protection. For those with more oily or breakout prone skin, consider a powder mineral makeup such as Stript or Bare Minerals. Dermalogica makes a liquid mineral makeup and also a tinted sunscreen SPF 15 that’s a great two-in-one for those days you don’t want to wear a lot of makeup. Keep in mind that high levels of protection are hard to find in two-in-one products and even if it claims an SPF higher than 15 that usually isn’t the case.

Bottom line is sunscreen is good for your health and your look so find the routine that’s right for you. And if you’re not sure, come see me…I can help you figure it out!
